The 2009 Silicon Valley Board Index examines the board composition and practices of 100 public technology companies in and around Silicon Valley. Specifically, the index looked at:
- Female representation on Silicon Valley boards, which declined slightly
- Trends in independent board leadership, including nonexecutive chairmen and lead directors
- The number of board and committee meetings
- The trend toward annual director elections
- Director compensation, including the growing use of restricted stock and restricted stock units as a component of director compensation.
The 2009 index also includes a roundtable discussion featuring three experienced directors, who explore how proposed governance legislation and the trend toward more transparency may impact Silicon Valley boards.
