Beyond the Family Tree: Succession planning for family businesses

How can family companies ensure that they have the right leadership on hand when they need it? Family companies can position themselves for the future by investing in robust leadership development and succession planning processes adapted to the unique characteristics of family-owned businesses. They should also understand the situations when it may be necessary or appropriate to consider candidates from outside the organization and the leadership qualities of executives who tend to excel in a family company environment.
